Work
Examined reciprocation linkage across 131.0M papers and 2.9B citations from OpenAlex (1975–2023). Contrary to expectations that digital search would increase reciprocity, mean mutual citations per paper dropped by 87.9% and the pooled rate fell 95.3%. However, interdisciplinary papers (citing 3+ fields) exceeded single-discipline papers by 3%–17% across a central band of reference deciles (10–46 references, ~58% of the corpus).
