An analysis of 50 years of OpenAlex data on how a paper's interdisciplinarity relates to mutual citations — pairs of papers that cite each other. Grouping papers by field diversity, it finds that the more fields a paper cites, the less likely any citation is reciprocated — a decline that holds across every group over time.
